Skip Hire FAQs - Delivery, Permits, Skip Sizes & Waste Types

Got a question about hiring a skip? You’re in the right place.

We’ve answered the most common questions about skip hire, including choosing the right skip size, delivery and collection times, skip permits, accepted waste types, hire periods and recycling. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, our team is always happy to help.

Choosing a Skip:

Choosing the right skip size can be difficult, especially if you’ve never hired a skip before. The amount of waste generated from a project is often underestimated, which can result in ordering a skip that’s too small.

Our Skip Size Advisor Tool is designed to help. Simply answer a few questions about your project, the type of waste you’re disposing of, and the estimated volume of material. We’ll then recommend the most suitable skip size for your needs.

If you’re still unsure, our friendly team is always happy to help. Contact us via our contact page or give us a call on 01253 892020 for advice and we’ll ensure you get the right skip at the best value for your project.

As a guide, a 4-yard skip is suitable for small household clearances and garden waste, while 6-yard and 8-yard skips are ideal for renovation projects and bulky waste. Larger skips are commonly used for construction, commercial waste and major property clearances. If you’re unsure, our team can help you choose the right size.

You can also view our full range of skips on our Skip Sizes & Prices page to compare capacities and find the best option for your project.

Try to visualise all the waste piled together in one place rather than spread around your property. Many customers underestimate the volume of waste generated during DIY projects, house clearances and renovations. If you’re between sizes, we usually recommend choosing the larger skip to avoid needing a second collection.
Still unsure? Use our Skip Size Advisor Tool or contact our team for advice before booking.

In many cases, yes. A slightly larger skip can often provide better value than ordering a second skip if the first one becomes full. Choosing the correct size from the start can save both time and money.

If you have any special placement requirements, you can add a note on the online checkout page or alternatively, please contact us before delivery on 01253 892020.

Permits & Placement:

A skip permit is usually required when a skip is placed on a public road, highway or other non-private land. If your skip is being placed on a driveway or private property, a permit is generally not required.

During the booking process, you will be asked where the skip will be located. If a permit is required, we can arrange this on your behalf. Permit costs and approval times vary depending on the local council responsible for the area.

Yes, provided the necessary permit has been obtained from the local authority. Our team can advise whether a permit is required and arrange the application where applicable.

This depends on your local council’s requirements and whether there is sufficient space for safe pedestrian access. We can advise on suitable placement options when booking.

We can arrange skip permits on your behalf as part of the online booking process. Simply select that your skip will be placed on a public road or non-private land and the appropriate permit options will be calculated where applicable.

Permit fees, processing times and conditions vary between councils, and our system will apply the relevant permit requirements based on the location of your skip.

Recycling:

Once collected, your waste is transported to our recycling facility where it is sorted and processed. Materials such as wood, metal, cardboard, plastic and aggregates are separated wherever possible for recycling and recovery.

Learn more about our recycling and waste management services on our Waste Management page.

We are committed to reducing landfill and maximising recycling rates wherever possible. A significant proportion of the waste we collect is recovered, recycled or reused through our waste management processes.

Some materials require specialist treatment or disposal to comply with environmental legislation. Restricting these items helps protect the environment and ensures waste is handled safely and responsibly.

Delivery & Collection:

Not always. If you’ve clearly marked where you’d like the skip placed and there is suitable access, we can usually deliver your skip without you being present. We recommend providing clear instructions when booking.

We offer prompt skip delivery throughout Blackpool, Fylde, Wyre and surrounding areas. In many cases, next-day and even same-day delivery may be available depending on availability and location.

To check current availability, book online or call 01253 892020.

Simply contact our team when you’re finished with the skip and we’ll arrange collection. Alternatively, if you’ve booked online, you may be able to manage your booking using the link provided in your confirmation email.

To request collection, visit our Arrange Collection page, use the collection link in your booking confirmation email or contact our team directly.

Yes. Our standard hire period is usually up to 14 days, but longer hire periods can often be arranged. Please contact us if you require the skip for an extended period.

If you require an extended hire period, please contact our office and we’ll be happy to discuss your requirements.

Waste Types:

Most household, garden and construction waste can be placed in a skip, including furniture, wood, plastics, cardboard, green waste, soil, bricks, rubble and general non-hazardous waste.

Some items that require specialist processing, such as mattresses, televisions, computer monitors, tyres and fridges/freezers, may still be accepted but must be declared during booking and may incur an additional disposal charge. These items can be added as extras during checkout where available.

If you’re unsure whether an item can be disposed of in your skip, please contact our team before booking.

Certain hazardous or regulated materials cannot be placed in skips due to environmental and safety regulations. These typically include asbestos, chemicals, solvents, paints, gas cylinders, clinical waste and other hazardous materials.

Some items such as mattresses, tyres, televisions, monitors and fridges/freezers require specialist handling and disposal. These can often be accepted when declared in advance and added as chargeable extras during the booking process.

If you’re unsure about any item, please contact us before placing it in your skip.

Yes. Soil, hardcore, bricks, concrete and rubble can usually be disposed of in a skip. However, these materials are very heavy, so certain skip sizes may be recommended depending on the quantity involved.

Plasterboard must be disposed of separately from general waste due to recycling regulations.

Please let us know during the booking process if your waste contains plasterboard so we can advise on the correct disposal method.

Yes. Mattresses can be disposed of through our skip hire service but require separate handling and processing. During the booking process, mattresses can be added as a chargeable extra, allowing us to ensure they are disposed of correctly and in accordance with waste regulations.
